Nairobi, as a capital city, is unique in having a wildlife park on its doorstep. Indeed the city abuts the Nairobi National Park on all but the southern perimeter so it is possible to photograph a rhino, browsing peace fully among the whistling thorn with high-rise office buildings in the backdrop. Some of the wildlife is migratory and when vegetation and water are present outside the park, they move out into Maasailand through the unfenced southern boundary. There is also a resident population of plains game and predators so a visit at any time of the year is a rewarding experience. Well laid out, with exceptionally well-maintained roads, the park is a model for all others, geophysically and administratively. Of the most popular species only the elephant is an absentee. But the rest of the Big Five: leopard, lion, buffalo and rhino - as well as a multitude of other creatures are all well represented.

The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust is a small flexible charity, established in memory of David Sheldrick, famous Naturalist and founder Warden of Kenya's giant Tsavo East National Park in which he served from 1948 until 1976. Since its inception in 1977, the Trust has played an extremely significant and important role in Kenya's conservation effort. Six Trustees assisted by an Advisory Committee of practical Naturalists with a lifetime experience of African conditions oversee and direct the operations of the Trust. The orphan elephants and rhinos are just some of the many wildlife commitments we are involved in. The Trust does not solicit funds and relies entirely on donations from its caring and compassionate friends.

On your arrival at the Kiambethu Tea Estate, you will be guests for lunch and afternoon tea. The Kiambethu Estate is located at an altitude of 7000 feet above sea level, and has lush acres of tea plantations that seem to vanish in the horizon. Two English families, Mitchell & McDonnell in the early 1900's, built the Estate. These families are said to be the first to have ventured into the tea business. You will also have a lecture on the area and about the production of tea. In the afternoon, a walk through the tea plantations and forests will display the conditions needed for the growth of tea.

Lake Nakuru, a small (it varies from 5 to 30 square kilometers) shallow alkaline lake on the edge of the town of Nakuru lies about 160 kilometers north of Nairobi. It can therefore be visited in a day tour from the capital or more likely as part of a circuit taking in the Masai Mara or Lake Baringo and east to Samburu. The lake is world famous as the location of the greatest bird spectacle on earth - myriads of fuschia pink flamingoes whose numbers are legion, often more than a million maybe two. The park now has more than 25 rhinos, one of the largest concentrations in the country, so the chances of spotting these survivors are good. There are also a number of Rothschild's giraffe, again translocated for safety from western Kenya beginning in 1977. Waterbuck are very common and both the Kenya species are found here. Among the predators are lion and leopard, the latter being seen much more frequently in recent times. The park also has large sized python snakes that inhabit the dense woodlands, and can often be seen crossing the roads or dangling from trees....
